New Jersey Will Allow NCAA Betting: What Does It Mean

This week, the preseason NCAA Men’s Basketball AP poll was announced, as the season (hopefully) gets ready to open on November 25.

For the first time since the 1978-1979 season, Rutgers University will start a campaign ranked. The Scarlet Knights will begin their season ranked 24th. This follows up a campaign that saw Rutgers ranked for the first time since that same season 41 years ago.

This of course follows the 2019-20 season that was cut short, and which had two New Jersey teams ranked and ready to make deep runs in the NCAA tournament. First Team All-America Myles Powell had Seton Hall inside the top 10 for much of the campaign, and could have made some serious noise.

But for bettors, fans, and alumni in the Garden State, even if those two teams made the tournament, Rider University won the MAAC, or maybe St. Peter’s/Monmouth, you would not have been able to bet on the teams. If the Prudential Center hosted a regional or pod, you could also not bet on any of those games, no matter which teams were playing.

New Jersey still does not allow bettors to wager on in-state college teams, but that could be changing next fall. There will be a referendum placed on the ballot in November of 2021 seeking to change that law. The law should pass easily, especially with the amount of money coming into the state coffers each month thanks to sports betting.

What will it mean for New Jersey bettors?

As said earlier in the passage, Rutgers is ranked for the second season in a row, and could be on the cusp of joining the upper tier of teams. New Jersey is a hoops hotbed, and the Scarlet Knights could become a new power in the Big Ten.

Seton Hall is always a good team, and competes in one of the better leagues in the country.

For the three MAAC teams, Monmouth, Rider, and St. Peter’s, who all have been at times good over the last decade, bettors will get a chance to

Farleigh Dickenson (NEC), NJIT (Atlantic Sun), and Princeton (Ivy) are the other three Division 1 teams in the state.

NCAA Football

Rutgers is the lone BCS team in the state, and the Scarlet Knights are on the rise with Greg Schiano back at the wheel. This is probably the team that would be wagered on the most, and would be a big boon to the sports books if the law is changed.

Strategies to bet on NJ college teams

Of course, if the law is passed next fall, it will coincide with the rise of both the Rutgers basketball and football programs. Both could be very tempting teams to back next November.

One year out from the vote, it looks promising that the law will be changed to allow wagering on in-state college events. It has the backing of State Senator Paul Sarlo, who might be the most powerful politician at the state level.
